The five-day extended weekend - from Raksha Bandhan to Independence Day - didn't manage to work its magic on Aamir Khan's 'Laal Singh Chaddha' and Akshay Kumar-starrer 'Raksha Bandhan'.
Both the film clashed at the box-office on Thursday (August 11), and failed to reach the Rs 50 crore mark in five days. Despite high anticipations, the films received mixed reviews amid boycott calls on social media.
According to film trade analyst Sumit Kadel, the early estimate showed that 'Laal Singh Chaddha' managed to earn just Rs 7.5 crore to Rs 8.5 crore (nett) on Monday (Independence Day). He also shared that the film registered a drop of 15-20 per cent on a National Holiday, which has always been one of the biggest holidays for the box office. In the five-day extended weekend, the highly-anticipated movie has managed to drag itself to around Rs 45 crore.
In another tweet, Kadel shared that the movie had merely 15-20 per cent occupancy and some shows even got cancelled due to no audience. "This is really sad and darkest phase for the Hindi film industry," his post read.
Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh also said that they couldn't make any breakthroughs during the long weekend. "Day-wise trending remains lacklustre. Hasn't benefitted despite the holidays," he tweeted.
On the release day, the movie collected the highest during the week with Rs 11.70 crore. The opening weekend saw a box-office collection of Rs 7.26 crore on Friday (Day 2), Rs 9 crore on Saturday (Day 3) and Rs 10 crore on Sunday (Day 4).
In the following tweet, the film critic said he was shocked to see holiday releases like 'Laal Singh Chaddha' and 'Raksha Bandhan' couldn't topple the opening day record of Rs 14.11 crore held by 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2'. The Kartik Aaryan-starrer was released on a non-holiday on May 20.
Going by the current trends, Adarsh also predicted that the new releases won't be able to surpass the opening weekend business of 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2'. The 2007 sequel made Rs 55.96 crore in only three days after its release.
"Box-office can be so damn unpredictable," he wrote.
Directed by Advait Chandan, 'Laal Singh Chaddha' is the official remake of Tom Hanks's 1994 classic 'Forrest Gump' and follows the titular character's journey and how he overcomes many challenges of life, which coincides with the many iconic events in Indian history.
On the other hand, Kumar-led 'Raksha Bandhan' faced a similar fate.
Although the Monday figures aren't in, the movie has managed to collect just Rs 28.16 crore in four days. It has not managed to hit double-digit collections even once since its release. On the release day, it made Rs 8.20 crore. The opening weekend collection remains at Rs 6.40 crore on Friday, Rs 6.51 crore on Saturday and Rs 7.05 crore on Sunday.
"(Collection from) mass pockets remain steady, but the overall 4-day total is disappointing," Adarsh said.
The Aanand L Rai-directorial is a story about Lala Kedarnath (Kumar) and his relationship with his four sisters. It focuses on his efforts to get his sisters married and tackles issues such as dowry and body shaming.
Reportedly, 'Laal Singh Chaddha' was released on 3,500 screens across the country and 'Raksha Bandhan' opened on 2,500 screens.
'Laal Singh Chaddha' and 'Raksha Bandhan' join the list of recent star-led Hindi movies such as "Shamshera" (Ranbir Kapoor), "Jayeshbhai Jordaar"(Ranveer Singh Ranveer Singh), "Runway 34" (Ajay Devgn) that have had a lacklustre run at the box-office.
Alia Bhatt's 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' and 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2' were the only Bollywood films to cross the Rs 100 crore mark.
