Varanasi: Denizens recalled pain of the country’s partition by observing Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas (Partition Horrors Remembrance Day) on August 14, on Sunday.
The Banaras Hindu University academicians and officials, led by registrar Prof Arun Kumar Singh, carried out a silent procession on the campus from Malviya Bhawan in morning to mark the day. After passing through IMS, Women’s College crossing, Meera colony, LD guest house and vice chancellor residence, the procession culminated at the same venue. Participants observed silence for two minutes to pay tributes to those who lost their lives during partition horror. They called upon the people to always keep the sacrifices of ancestors to dedicate life for keeping the freedom safe.
The Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies hosted a photo exhibition on the occasion and also screened a documentary showing the sufferings of people during partition on the occasion of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. Addressing the gathering, CIHTS vice-chancellor Prof Geshe Ngawang Samten called upon the new generation of India to keep the pain and horror of partition in mind in order to strengthen the feeling of unity and social harmony. Due to hatred and violence, lakhs of people had to be displaced and even lose their lives during painful partition, he added.
The photo exhibition at CHITS will remain opened for visitors till August 17 between 10am and 5pm, said the institute officials.
Hundreds of people of Sindhi Samaj including women and children took part in a silent procession flagged-off by the district magistrate Kaushal Raj Sharma at Shahid Park in Sigra area to mark Partition Horror Remembrance Day. Carrying placards showcasing painful memories of partition the participants reached Jhulelal temple premises in Luxa and took pledge to observe this day every year in future. After inauguration of a photo exhibition, the speakers recalled how country’s own people were compelled to leave their native places as migrants and had to face hardship to get their life settled after struggling for years.
