Tamil stunt choreographer arrested for call to break Periyar statue

Tamil films stunt choreographer Kanal Kannan was arrested after he said that the Periyar statue outside Sri Ranganathanar temple in Srirangam.

Tamil stunt choreographer Kanal Kannan was arrested by the cybercrime wing of Chennai Police after a case was registered against him under sections 153 and 505 (1) (b) based on a complaint by cadres of Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam.

Kanal Kannan, who is the president of the art and culture wing of Hindu Munnani, in a recent speech sought the dismantling of the Periyar statue outside Sri Ranganatha temple Srirangam. “Nearly a lakh Hindus worship at Sri Ranganathar temple every day. But opposite the temple, there is a statue of someone who said that there is no god. The day when that statue is broken will be the day we Hindus will rise,” Kanal Kannan said.

The life-size bronze statue of rationalist leader and founder of Dravidar Kazhagam (DK) Periyar E V Ramasamy Naicker, popularly known as Periyar, was installed in 2006.

Kanal Kannan later sought anticipatory bail, which was rejected by the district court on Thursday, leading to his arrest on Sunday night in Puducherry. Kanan has worked as a stunt choreographer in several Tamil, Malayali, Kannada, and Telugu movies. He has also made special appearances in many movies.
