Vaccine for Omicron likely in 6 months: SII’s Poonawala
Pune-based Serum Institute of India is working on an Omicron-specific vaccine for Covid-19 with its US partner, Novavax. The vaccine is expected to be rolled out within six months.The vaccine will be specific to the BA5 sub-variant of the Omicron strain, SII CEO Adar Poonawalla told a TV channel, adding that he thought “this vaccine is important as a booster”.
Intranasal vax trial a success, submitted data: Bharat Biotech
Bharat Biotech International Limited (BBIL) said on Monday it has submitted phase III clinical trial data for its intranasal Covid-19 vaccine BBV154 to the Indian regulatory authorities. The submission was made after the vaccine proved to be safe, well-tolerated, and immunogenic in subjects in controlled trials as a primary as well as heterologous booster, the company added. “Immunogenicity was evaluated through serum neutralising antibodies by PRNT assays and serum IgG’s through ELISAs,” Bharat Biotech said in a statement. “To assess vaccine response through the intranasal route, secretory IgAs were evaluated by ELISA in serum and saliva. Evaluation was also carried out for the ability of BBV154 to elicit long-term memory T and B cell responses against the ancestral and Omicron variants.”
Over 7 crore Covid vaccine lying with states
More than seven crore doses of Covid-19 vaccine are lying unused with states and Union territories, the government said on Monday. According to an update from health ministry on vaccine availability, the government has provided more than 199.01 crore doses to states/UTs free of cost directly (via the free of cost channel) and through the direct state procurement system. “More than 7.06 crore balance and unutilised doses are still available with them,” it said.
Telangana on Monday recorded 265 new Covid-19 cases, taking the tally to 8,29,467.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Monday said he has tested positive for Covid-19 for the second time this year.
Chhattisgarh on Monday reported 48 Covid-19 cases at a positivity rate of 2.77 per cent, taking the tally to 11,70,909, while the death toll increased by one to reach 14,091.
West Bengal's Covid-19 tally rose to 21,02,757 on Monday as 270 more people tested positive for the infection, 209 fewer than the previous day.
The toll remained unchanged at 21,422 as no fresh fatality was recorded.

The Covid-19 tally in Madhya Pradesh reached 10,52,310 on Monday after the detection of 110 cases, while the death toll remained unchanged at 10,763.
Gujarat on Monday reported 290 Covid-19 cases and two deaths, which raised the tally to 12,65,743 and toll to 10,993.
New daily Covid-19 cases as well as the active infections in Tamil Nadu continued to dip on Monday. While the State reported 703 new cases today, the active cases dropped to 7,145, according to a government bulletin.
