MUMBAI: Two people died after a portion of a ceiling collapsed in a ground plus two-storey building in Mulund (East).
The incident occurred at around 7:45pm on Monday evening at Moti Chhaya Building in Nane Pada in Mulund (East).
According to officials, the deceased have been identified as Devshankar Nathalal Shukla (93) and his wife Arkhiben Devshankar Shukla (87).
"A part of the ceiling collapsed on the 1st floor. It was a ground plus two storey private structure. It was approximately 20-25 years old. A notice under section 351 of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MMC) Act was already issued by T ward for unauthorised construction,” an official said.
Both the victims were rushed to the nearby Ashirwad Critical Care Hospital where they were declared dead on arrival.
"A notice served under 351 of the MMC Act like a show cause notice, asking the owner or occupier to show the permissions for any construction carried out," an official explained.
The incident was designated as a level 1 disaster.
