BENGALURU: Idgah Maidan in Chamarajpet has turned into a fortress with a 1,000-strong special police force contingent drawn from the Rapid Action Force (RAF), City Armed Reserve (CAR), and Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) taking position in and around it on Sunday afternoon.
A contingent of 240 RAF personnel entered the ground around 2.30pm on Sunday and took stock of the situation. Similarly, local police force accompanied by eight battalions from KSRP took out a route march in and around the ground as well as vital roads in Chamarajpet, including sensitive areas such as Tipu Nagar, Valmiki Nagar and Azad Nagar.
DCP (west) Laxman Nimbargi said police will be deployed in and around Idgah Maidan through the night. “At any given point in time, at least 400 personnel will be pre - sent near the ground,” he said. Another senior cop said some history-sheeters and anti-social elements will be taken into preventive custody by Sunday evening.
“We have identified more than 50 such history-sheeters. Another 100 history-sheeters from south, west and east Bengaluru were summoned to the jurisdiction - al police stations and let off with a warning,” he added.
