Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has been issued a notice by Mumbai Police to appear for questioning in a case registered against him over nude pictures which he shared on social media.

According to PTI, the police will be recording the actor's statement in the matter on August 22 as he has been asked to "join the investigation".

Officials from Chembur Police station on Friday visited Singh's residence to serve him a notice to join the probe. However, the actor was not in Mumbai and informed the officials that he will be returning to Mumbai on August 16. .

The notice will be served to Singh the day he is back in the city, and he will be called to record a statement on August 22, the official told PTI.

Last month, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against Singh on the basis of a complaint filed by an office-bearer of a non-profit organization.

An office-bearer of the NGO had alleged that the actor has hurt the sentiments of women in general and insulted their modesty through his photographs. The FIR stated that India has a "good culture" but due to such pictures everyone's sentiments are hurt.

The police has registered the FIR against Singh under various Indian Penal Code Sections like 292 (sale of obscene books, etc), 293 (sale of obscene objects to young people), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and provisions of the Information Technology Act.

Singh, a recipient of several awards, is known for his roles in films like 'Bajirao Mastani', 'Padmaavat' and 'Gully Boy'.
