Maharashtra: First year junior college cut-offs dip further in second list

MUMBAI: The fall in first year junior college (FYJC) cut-offs continued with the second merit list in top-rung colleges registering a drop of up to three percentage points compared to the cut-offs in the first list. Last year's second round cut-offs had fallen by an average of two percentage points compared to the first list then.
The first merit list this year had seen cut-offs drop by up to five percentage points compared to last year's first merit list.
The second list announced on Friday had 69,691 students being allotted FYJC seats. Of these, 15,121 got their first preference seats. With top-rung colleges hoping to fill most seats after the second round, these are likely to begin the academic year by the end of the month. There are two more admission rounds to go.
Both arts and science streams saw a drop of up to three percentage points in cut-offs. The St Xaviers cut-off for arts was 93.4%, a 0.8 percentage point fall from the first list and 0.6 percentage point drop from the second round of 2021. St Xaviers vice-principal Savio Dsouza said that after the second-round admissions end on August 17, they will take a call on beginning class XI.
Vaze College's arts cut-off of 86.6% was 0.8 percentage points higher than the first list. Compared to last year, it dropped 3.4 percentage points. Jaihind's second round cut-off was unchanged at 90.2%. The difference between Ruia's first and second list cut-offs for arts was just 0.2 percentage points as it closed at 91.2%.
St Xaviers science cut-off of 88% was a fall of three percentage points compared to last year. Ruparel's science cut-off of 89% was a drop of two percentage points from last year.
Colleges filling over 50% of seats can commence lectures.
Commerce cut-offs dropped by up to 2 percentage points with Ruparel closing at 88.2% in the second round. NM College closed at 92.2% compared to 93.4% last year. Vaze College's commerce cut-off of 90.8% was the same as that for the science stream.
A total of 42,689 students were allotted seats in the commerce stream. Of these, 8,088 have got their college of first preference.
Some colleges where cut-offs had shot up last year with students taking admission closer home due to the pandemic, saw a sharp slide now. The arts cut-off at Birla College, Kalyan, closed at 62.2%. Last year the cut-off after the second round was 71.79%.
