PRAYAGRAJ: Intensifying the crackdown on mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad, a joint team of police, revenue department and administration attached his six-bigha (1.4602 hectare) land in Koilaha village under the Gangster Act in Kaushambi district on Friday.
The attached land is worth around Rs 24 crores and is located at Koilaha village under the limits of Chail tehsil of Kaushambi .
Prayagraj superintendent of police (City) Dinesh Kumar Singh, who was part of the team, said: “The joint team, after checking and verifying various records and subsequent to investigations, came to know about the properties of mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad in the neighbouring Kaushambi district.
These assets were being accumulated through illegal means. After the order of the district magistrate (Prayagraj), the joint teams searched the land belonging to Atiq, who is the leader of interstate 227 gang.”
The joint team also installed a board pertaining to attachment of the property at the land.
The police restricted the entry of locals towards the site and attached the property under section 14 (1) of the Gangster Act. Police said that Atiq has a total of 96 cases registered against him in different police stations of the state. He is currently lodged at Sabarmati jail in Gujarat.
A team of six police and administrative officials including SP (City), SDM (Sadar), Deputy SP (City -II), SDM (Chail), Inspector (Dhoomanganj) and Inspector ( Puramufti) were deputed to attach the illegal property and maintaining law and order during the exercise.
A senior official told TOI: “A joint team of police and administration has already attached the properties of the mafia-turned-politician worth more than Rs 300 crore in Prayagraj district in the past three years. Police are still looking for other properties of the mafia accumulated through illegal means in neighbouring Kaushambi and other districts. This was the first time when properties of Atiq were attached in Chail tehsil of the Kaushambi district.
