"Appalled that Sir Salman Rushdie has been stabbed while exercising a right we should never cease to defend," tweeted Johnson. "Right now my thoughts are with his loved ones. We are all hoping he is okay."

According to reports, Rushdie fell through a barrier to the stage and was seen with blood on his hands. The audience tackled the attacker and Rushdie was then treated onstage following the assault.

New York Police released a statement saying that Rushdie was stabbed in the neck.
An Associated Press reporter witnessed a man storm the stage at the Chautauqua Institution and attack Rushdie as he was being introduced. The author was taken or fell to the floor, and the man was restrained.
