Mumbai Metro 3: Aarey depot speeding to April 2023 deadline
The state government is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the Metro 3 car shed remains at Aarey. On Thursday, Ashwini Bhide, the managing director of the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), announced that the car shed for the underground Line 3 (Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ) will be ready for Phase 1 operations by April 2023.
Bhide said work is in progress at full speed, considering that the Phase 1 stretch between BKC and SEEPZ is scheduled for December 2023 opening.
Bhide said, “To meet the deadline, certain improvements have been made in the plan. We are in talks with our consultants to ensure that the depot work is expedited. Moreover, the amount of work expected to be carried out for the depot for Phase 1 operation has been prioritised.”

BMC says Omicron responsible for Covid upstick in last 2 months
In the last two months, Mumbai saw a sporadic spike in COVID-19 cases. A genome sequencing report has revealed that Omicron and its sub lineages were responsible for the uptick of COVID cases over the last two months.
According to the official data, 64 of the 230 samples were detected with BA 2.74 variant, followed by 45 samples each of BA2.76 and BA 2.75 variant, 28 samples of BA 2.38, 19 samples of BA.5, 18 samples of another variant, nine samples of BA 2.38.1 and two samples of BA.4 variant has been detected.
A senior health official from BMC said that vaccination is the only way to keep the virus at bay.

Mumbai weather update: IMD predicts moderate rain, strong wind in city & suburbs
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted generally cloudy sky with moderate rain in the city and suburbs. It has also forecast occasional strong winds of 40 to 50 kilometre per hour gusting up to 60 kmph.
The maximum temperature predicted by the weather department is 29°C, while minimum may be 25°C.
Heavy rains were witnessed in the city on Sunday and moderate to heavy showers over the last few days.
Two men fell into the creek at SV Road and Sea Link Road Junction, Bandra (W), Mumbai. Search operation underway.
According to the officials, of the two, one man was found dead. The deceased was identified as Javed Alam Shaikh (28) meanwhile the search is underway for the second person. Officials fear he has also died.
Thane sees 212 new COVID-19 cases; active tally at 1,206
Thane district of Maharashtra recorded 212 new coronavirus positive cases, which took its overall infection tally to 7,36,029, a health official said on Friday.
With the addition of these cases on Thursday, there are now 1,206 active cases in the district, he said.
As no patient succumbed to the infection during the day, the death toll remained unchanged at 11,936, while the recovery count rose to 7,23,426, he added.

Bombay High Court on Thursday granted bail to Mohammed Rafique Siddique who was arrested following a building collapse in Malvani. The two-storey structure collapsed on the adjoining building.
The April 9, 2021, incident killed 12 persons, including nine members of Siddique’s family. Siddique who owned the building that collapsed as an accused as well.
While granting bail, Justice Bhati Dangre observed that the applicant, in any case, cannot be held responsible for the “rash and negligent act, resulting in the collapse where he himself lost his family members”. The court, however, said that Siddiqui “may face the consequences of the trial when the prosecution will establish and connect him to the grave and negligent act”.

Gunshots fired outside Gazebo Shopping Centre on Linking Road in Bandra
The bustling Linking Road between Bandra and Khar was plunged into a panic after unidentified men fired three gunshots outside a garments store and fled the scene.
According to the Khar police, the incident occurred at around 7.20 p.m. on Thursday. The police said that the two men arrived on a bike and stopped across the Gazebo Shopping Centre.
Parking the bike, they crosses the street, walked up to the store and fired three rounds in the air. Even as panic erupted around them, the trio threw a letter on the ground and fled the scene.
The letter thrown on the ground by the accused was examined. It contained a message in Hindi saying, "Whoever does business here will not be spared."
The Police is currently investigating the case.
Mumbai banker wakes up to 1,573-euro cyber fraud
A 32-year-old woman working as a bank manager had recently procured a multicurrency bank card, and deposited 2,000 Euros in the said card as she was planning to go on a holiday with her husband to Turkey.
The woman was left shocked when she woke up in the morning and found that she had received 29 text messages informing that 1,573 Euros had been siphoned off from her card.
According to the Wadala TT police, the complainant had planned to visit Turkey on August 10. Since Indian currency is not accepted in Turkey, she had applied for a multi-currency card on August 3 through her bank.
After receiving the card, she deposited 2,000 Euros, so that she could meet her expenses abroad but a day later she got messages informing of the debit of 1,573 euros.
Investigation is underway to ascertain how the fraudster managed to siphon off the money from the card, without the complainant having shared any details with anyone.

Ten trains moving between Pune and Mumbai vice versa were affected after heavy rains triggered a landslide at the Lonavala-Karjat ghat section, also called the Southeast ghat section, of the Central Railway in the midnight hours of Thursday.
“The location is located at the approach of tunnel number-26. An on duty patrolman identified as Motilal Lobhi detected the fallen boulder and immediately swung into action by stopping one banker locomotive engine which was at the same area and moving closer. After stopping the locomotive, he alerted all the officials about the incident,” a CR official said.

TMC to organise 10 km marathon & Varsa cyclothon on August 14
The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) along with the Thane district athletics association will organise a 10 km marathon competition and annual cyclothon on August 14 on the occasion of the Amrit Mahotsav year of Indian Independence.
The said marathon competition will start from TMC headquarters and will end at the same place. The TMC chief Dr Vipin Sharma has appealed to citizens to participate in this marathon and cyclothon competition in large numbers. Also, at this time, Thane Police Marathon will also start from TMC headquarters and end at this place.
Sandeep Malvi, additional commissioner, TMC while giving the information about the competition said, "For this district level marathon competition, there will be two groups namely male (open group above 18 years) and female (open group above 16 years). The competition will start from TMC headquarters and will end from the same route from Nitin Company, Service Road, Koram Mall, Vartaknagar, Shivanagar, Upwan Lake, Birsa Munda Chowk, Unnati Garden, Shivanagar to the TMC headquarters."

Mankhurd RoB widening: From 4 to 8 lane connectivity
The Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC), also known as MahaRail, is aiming to complete the widening work of the Mankhurd road-over-bridge (RoB) by the end of the current financial year. Currently, this RoB has only four lanes – two on either side – and two more lanes on each side are being added, giving it eight lanes once the work is completed.
The Sion-Panvel Highway has eight lanes in total, both in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. However, the Mankhurd RoB, which is located on the highway, has only four lanes, creating a bottleneck situation that sees heavy traffic congestion during peak hours.
On average, about 2,50,000 vehicles use this RoB every day for entering / leaving Mumbai from / to Navi Mumbai. The Sion-Panvel Highway provides connectivity between Mumbai and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the old Mumbai-Pune Highway. It also caters to traffic movement to and from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT).

Maharashtra Govt to table supplementary demands in monsoon session
The monsoon session of the Maharashtra state legislature will be held from August 17 to 25 in Mumbai. The schedule and agenda were finalised on Thursday at the meetings of the Business Advisory Committees (BAC) of the state assembly and council at the Vidhan Bhavan.
The proceedings will take place on August 17 and 18 while there will be three-day holidays from August 19 and the proceedings will resume from August 22 till August 25.
This will be the first full fledged session of the Shinde Fadnavis government after the cabinet expansion and also after the special session held on July3 and4 to elect Speaker and win the trust vote.
The government will table the supplementary demands for 2022-23 on August 17 while discussion will take place on August 22 and 23 and thereafter it will be put to vote.
The Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in the budget session held in March had presented supplementary demands worth Rs 6250.36 crore. After the MVA government took over in November 2019 cumulatively it had presented a supplementary demand of Rs 1,73,243.69 crore.
Mahanagar Gas issues list of unassociated vendors
As a precautionary measure, Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has issued an advisory for its customers informing them about vendors that are no longer their authorised service providers.
