CHENNAI: Actor Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam on Thursday demanded that law enforcing agencies in
Tamil Nadu extend protection to dalit woman panchayat president of Eduthavainatham in Kallakuruchi district for hoisting the national flag.
Citing the petition of Eduthavainatham panchayat president V Sudha to police, MNM state secretary of Senthil Arumugam said it was disheartening and dispiriting to witness that even after 75 years of Independence, a representative of the people, rightfully and legally chosen by the people, is not allowed to hoist the national flag.
“Such discriminations are inhumane and blatant threats on the sanctity of democracy. The primary objective behind formation of local bodies was to ensure social equality. These continued incidents of discrimination are major deterrents to that very purpose,” he said.
He urged the chief minister (M K Stalin) to make it clear that any person indulging in actions that go against the fundamentals of our Constitution and social justice would face serious prosecution.
“Prompt and diligent actions from the government and the police department alone would not put an end to such shameful acts of discrimination. People realise that social discrimination in any form is against humanitarian values and a crime in the eyes of law,” he said.
