JAIPUR: A woman saved her brother's life in Sakaria village of Garhi subdivision of Banswara district by donating one of her kidneys on the eve of Raksha Bandhan.
Dayalal was an expatriate who returned to his native place Banswara from Kuwait in 2021. In December that year, he had a fever and cold followed by swelling all over his body. After a protracted investigation, it was diagnosed that both his kidneys were damaged. Initially, doctors advised dialysis.
After a long treatment, the doctors recommended a kidney transplant to the family, which they said was critical for Dayalal to survive.
But the doctors treating him insisted on a kidney donation from the immediate family to increase the chances of success of the operation.
Dayalal (51) has two sisters. On examination, it was found that the kidney of his sister Asha Devi (46) could be a lifesaver for her brother.
After Asha Devi agreed to donate a kidney, the operation took place a day before Raksha Bandhan. Both sister and brother are recuperating in the hospital, said Asha Devi's husband Suresh Chandra Suthar. Asha Devi, a mother of two sons and a daughter, said she was encouraged by her husband.
Suthar told TOI over the phone from Ahmedabad that his brother-in-law was only 51-year-old and if he could survive with a kidney donated by his sister, that was the least they could do.
