Amulya Handhique: Stern satyagrahi who delivered secret messages of Non-Violence Movement

NEW DELHI: Born in Assam's Golaghat district, Amulya Handhique was inspired and fascinated by Mahatma Gandhi's policy on non-violence for India's freedom from British rule since his school days.
Deeply interested in art and music since his childhood, he was progressive in thought and fearless in expression. Handhique, born to a renowned and historical Handhique family of the Ahom royalty in 1927, took an active part in the Non-Violence Movement and became a satyagrahi. Delivering secret messages of the movement, and organising secret meetings of satyagrahis were some of the key tasks he carried out efficiently.
Handhique was actively involved in the freedom movement due to which he could not appear in the matriculation examination on time and lost three years in between. He finally passed matriculation in 1948 from Government High School in Golaghat.
Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's Quit India Movement, Amulya Handhique turned himself into a stern satyagrahi of the freedom movement in the Golaghat region. The Satyagraha Movement in the Golaghat region against led by Sankar Chandra Barua. The Quit India Movement of 1942 took momentum in Golaghat.
After matriculation in 1948, Handhique took admission in Intermediate Arts (IA) at Deb Raj Roy College in Golaghat. He was elected editor of the Assamese section of the college magazine's first issue. The magazine 'Debrajian' was published in 1951-52.
Handhique joined Nogora High School in Furkating, Golaghaat as a teacher after passing out from DR College. After working for a couple of years in the school, he joined in Furkating High School but was removed from there by the secretary of the managing committee for speaking some harsh truths fearlessly. He was unemployed for some time but later began to earn his living by distributing newspapers.
Amulya Handhique, who passed away earlier this year, also established a literary organisation 'Seuji Kanan Sakha Sahitya Sabha' as a branch of the Asom Sahitya Sabha, the highest literary organisation in Assam.
