HIGHLIGHTS

  • TMC leader Anubrata Mondal was arrested and sent to CBI custody for 10 days in cattle smuggling case.
  • TMC said it has 'zero-tolerance for corruption' and sought unbiased probe into the case.
  • Opposition parties attacked the TMC and asked Mamata Banerjee to break her silence on the arrest.

The CBI on Thursday arrested Trinamool Congress strongman Anubrata Mondal at his residence in Birbhum for his alleged involvement in a multi-crore cattle smuggling case. The action, coming close on the heels of party heavyweight Partha Chatterjee’s arrest, outraged the TMC which accused the Centre of ‘political vendetta’.

Meanwhile, opposition parties in West Bengal capitalised on Mondal’s arrest to mount a scathing attack on the ruling TMC. The BJP accused the Mamata Banerjee-led party of being neck-deep in corruption, while the Congress said the day is not far when probe agencies would reach the top echelons of the party in the graft case.
