Construction of 5 medical colleges to start around Puja
Speaking at a government function, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state government is aiming to produce 2,000 doctors annually by 2030 from at least 24 medical colleges in the state. There are nine recognized colleges in the state now in the government sector.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. GUWAHATI: The construction of five medical colleges at Tamulpur, Golaghat, Bongaigaon, Morigaon and Dhemaji will start around Durga Puja, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday.
Speaking at a government function here, he said the state government is aiming to produce 2,000 doctors annually by 2030 from at least 24 medical colleges in the state. There are nine recognized colleges in the state now in the government sector.
Sarma said his government is putting efforts to open the Kokrajhar Medical College or Nalbari Medical College next year. He is hopeful that the second medical college in Guwahati, to be built by merging Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital and Kalapahar Covid Hospital, will be ready for opening by 2025. Simultaneously, Sarma said the state government is working on to inaugurate two other medical colleges in Nagaon and Tinsukia. “Ultimately, in 2026, we have the plan to start Charaideo and Biswanath Medical Colleges,” he said.
Sarma said his government has envisioned two more medical colleges, in Goalpara and Karimganj respectively. “Today, we can affirm that the goal of producing 2,000 doctors annually is achievable. We are heading in the right direction,” Sarma said.
Earlier in the day, he flagged off 83 new Basic Life Support Surface Ambulances of the 150 ambulances that are new additions to the 108 Mritunjoy ambulance service. Health minister Keshab Mahanta was also present on the occasion. “These ambulances will be beneficial for patients in rural and urban areas of Assam and aid in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates in the state,” Sarma added.
The 108 emergency ambulance service has saved 1,86,000 lives so far, he said. “Currently, 800 ambulances, including 779 Basic Life Support Surface Ambulances, 14 Advanced Life Support Surface Ambulances and seven Boat Ambulances, are providing emergency health transport services to the people (Of Assam),” he tweeted.

“The tender process to start the construction has been completed,” he said.
On Monday, Assam’s newest medical college, Dhubri Medical College (DMC) received the nod from the Medical Assessment and Rating Board under the National Medical Commission (NMC) to start the MBBS course from the 2022-23 academic session.
