Bengaluru: Two people were killed and several injured in communal clashes over an interfaith marriage in Hulihyder village of Koppal district in Karnataka Thursday.

“A Valmiki boy and a Muslim girl were in living together and had eloped. Both are majors. We brought them back and handed them to their respective families," said a police official.

Soon tenison started simmering between the two families and the communities and on Thursday it boiled over.

The two families had a history of hostilities.

The deceased have been identified as Venkappa (60) and Basha (22).

The situation is under control, the police said even as the situation was reviewed by Home Minister Araga Jnanendra.

The BJP-led Karnataka government is walking an extra mile to douse the flare-up at the earliest having faced flak over killings in coastal Karnataka recently.
