MUMBAI: The city on Wednesday registered a massive spike in new Covid cases. Mumbai registered 852, the highest single-day detection in 40 days.
The rise was 80% over Tuesday. Dr Mangala Gomare, BMC's executive health officer, said, "There is a rise in viral activity in the city due to rains. We will have to study the trend to understand what led to the spurt. On certain days targeted tests are held, leading to an increase in cases."
The Wednesday increase has also pushed up the city's daily positive rate to nearly 9%. The last time the city had detected more than 852 cases was on July 1, when 479 cases were reported.
The state saw a marginal rise in cases. Wednesday's 1,847 detections took the overall case count to 80,64,366; also, the state had seven Covid deaths, including four from MMR, two from Nagpur and one from Pune.
