
Mumbai, Maharashtra News Today Live (August 11): The legislators of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena were not invited to the meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) of the Maharashtra Assembly held Thursday morning to discuss the schedule of its upcoming monsoon session. Following the rebellion of Eknath Shinde in June and subsequent change of guard in Maharashtra, the Shinde camp and 40 supporting MLAs have been claiming they are the original Shiv Sena.
Meanwhile, the cabinet expansion of the Maharashtra government led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis finally took place on Tuesday. While 18 leaders from Sena’s Shinde faction and BJP got ministerial berths, several leaders felt left out and spoke in hushed tones about their frustration even during the swearing-in ceremony at Raj Bhavan.
In other news, two women succumbed to the injuries they sustained in the fire reported from a chawl in Worli Monday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has said in a statement. Laxmi Rathod, 50, was admitted to Kasturba Hospital and was being treated for her injuries when she succumbed on Tuesday at 3.30 am, according to information from the BMC’s Disaster Management Department. Madhu Rathod, 38, was declared dead at Nair Hospital on Wednesday evening.
Senior IAS officer Dr Vijay Suryawanshi on Thursday took charge as the Additional Metropolitan Commissioner of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
A 2006 batch IAS officer, Suryawanshi was earlier Municipal Commissioner of the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation near Mumbai. He has also served as district collector of Raigad and Gondia districts.
An alumnus of Sainik School Satara, Suryawanshi was also the Chief Executive Officer of Palghar and Kolhapur Zilla Parishads.
As Kolhapur ZP CEO, he initiated the Operation Kayapalat programme to improve public health parameters in Primary Health Centres. This became the basis for the national level Kayakalp Awards for public health organisations.(PTI)
The Bombay High Court on Thursday granted bail to Vipul Chitalia, former vice-president of Mehul Choksi-promoted Gitanjali Group, more than four years after he was arrested in the multi-crore rupees Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Chitalia in March 2018 alleging that he was responsible for handling unauthorised Letters of Undertaking (LoUs) and foreign Letters of Credit (FLCs) and maintaining contact with the bank officials.
Justice Bharati Dangre granted bail to Chitalia on Friday. A detailed order with bail conditions was not available immediately.
Chitalia has been booked under the Indian Penal Code sections related to criminal conspiracy, cheating and fraud and also under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
He approached the HC through advocate Vijay Aggarwal after a special CBI court refused him bail in December 2020.
Chitalia had been in prison for four years and the charges in the case were yet to be framed, so he should be granted bail, advocate Aggarwal argued.(PTI)
Rahul Narvekar, Speaker, Maharashtra assembly said "We have accepted the names sent to us by Shiv Sena group leader Eknath Shinde, who is also the Chief Minister. Shiv Sena has 55 MLAs and none of the group has come to us and said that they are a different faction. We have only one shiv Sena in front of us. As per the records in front of us, group leader has been appointed by the majority of MLAs. We sought names from the group leader (Shinde) and those names were added in the BAC."
The monsoon session of the Maharashtra legislature has been extended by two days, which will now conclude on August 25.
The decision to extend the session was taken during the meeting of the state legislature's business advisory committee (BAC) held on Thursday.
During the meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and attended by group leaders of all parties, it was decided that the monsoon session would be held between August 17 and 25. As per the earlier schedule, the session was to end on August 23.
The Houses will not function on August 19 as it is a holiday (on account of Dahi Handi festival). Moreover, there will be no session on weekends. So, considering all this, the committee members demanded that the duration of the session needs to be extended so that decisions that require approval of the Houses can be taken, a BJP leader said.(PTI)
Three persons were swept away in swollen drains after heavy rains in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, while the India Meteorological Department predicted a risk of flash floods in the Vidarbha region, officials said on Thursday.
Some rivers in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra were flooded after heavy showers and several people from Bhandara and Chandrapur were shifted to safer places, they said.
The heavy rains also caused damage to crops and an assessment survey was on, an agriculture department official said.
In Indore city of MP, two persons were swept away in swollen drains following heavy rains and efforts were on to trace them, police said.(PTI)
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has written to the Maharashtra urban development department seeking land allotment at Kanjurmarg for the Metro 6 car depot between Swami Samarth Nagar and Vikhroli.
“Now that the Shinde-led government has taken a decision to have Metro 3 car shed at Aarey instead of Kanjurmarg, for Metro 6 the land is sought by MMRDA at Kanjurmarg as per the original plan instead of integrated car depot,” said a source about the letter sent to the urban development department last week. It was a sunny Thursday morning in parts of Mumbai, after good spells of rain over the last few days. According to civic officials, most parts of the city did not witness rain in the morning.
The sun shone brightly in some areas of the metropolis, while other parts witnessed overcast skies. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted moderate rain in the city and suburbs with the possibility of heavy rainfall at isolated places in the next 24 hours. It has also forecast occasional strong winds of 40 to 50 kilometre per hour gusting up to 60 kmph.
According to civic officials, there will be a high tide of 4.59 metres in the Arabian Sea at 11.33 am and of 4.12 metres at 11.33 pm. (PTI)
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an engineer, who works with a power firm in Maharashtra's Solapur, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs one lakh, an official said on Wednesday.
The engineer of Utility Powertech Ltd, a joint venture company formed by the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and a private enterprise, the CBI official said.
The engineer allegedly demanded Rs 2,50,000 from a contractor, who is the complainant in the case, in connection with the return of his security deposit. After negotiation, the accused allegedly reduced the bribe amount to Rs two lakh and agreed to accept Rs one lakh as initial amount, he said.(PTI)

Barring the first two days of this month, Mumbai has been reporting more than 400 coronavirus infections everyday. The spike in the number of cases in the last 24 hours is nearly 79 per cent or 376 more compared to 476 infections reported on Tuesday.

The health of Telugu poet and activist P Varavara Rao, an accused in the Bhima Koregaon case who has been granted permanent medical bail by the Supreme Court, continues to remain poor, but the octogenarian is happy and relieved after the SC order, his lawyer said on Wednesday.
An SC bench headed by Justice U U Lalit on Wednesday observed that the medical condition of Rao, currently out on interim bail on health grounds, has not improved to such an extent that the relief granted earlier to him be withdrawn.
“Rao's health is still not that good. He is suffering from various ailments. He is relieved and happy with the Supreme Court order making his medical bail permanent,” Rao's lawyer Satyanarayan Iyer told PTI in Mumbai.(PTI)
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has shown its true colours, the Shiv Sena said on Wednesday as former Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi's remarks that BJP "broke" the Uddhav Thackeray-led party triggered a war of words.
Shiv Sena leader Ambadas Danve, who was appointed the Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council on Tuesday, said the BJP's strategy is to form an alliance with a party and then weaken it.
“The BJP has shown its true colours,” he said while responding to a query on Sushil Kumar Modi's remarks.

The Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of the Mumbai crime branch seized 266 kg ganja hidden in two cars and arrested two persons, a police official said on Wednesday.
The seized contraband is estimated to be worth Rs 80 lakh.

Special court allows ED's plea to record statement of lawyer Surendra Gadling. He has been in jail since 2018 in the Elgaar Parishad case.
Gadling argued in court that the entire chargesheet in the Elgaar Parishad case does not mention any proceeds of crime from him for the ED to invoke sections of Prevention of Money Laundering Act .
Special court said that whether there are proceeds of crime or not is a matter of investigation. Gadling will be interrogated by ED officials for three days from August 17-19 at Taloja jail.
