CHENNAI: Fresh cases in the state dropped below 1,000 to 972 on Monday compared to 1,057 on Sunday. The last time the state had reported cases below 1,000 was on June 22, when there were 771 new cases. The following day, the state reported 1,063 new cases and by July 7, the state was reporting 2,765 new cases. Cases dropped steadily after that and went below the 1,000 mark on Monday, a day after active cases dropped below the 10,000 mark.
The state discharged 1,453 patients from the Covid-19 registry, and the number of active cases dropped to 9,408. Chennai, which continues to report the highest number of cases in the state, logged 208 new cases a drop from 234 new cases on Sunday.
After Chennai, the highest number of cases were reported in Coimbatore (110). Fresh cases in Chengalpet dropped to 84 and all other districts had fewer than 100 new cases each.
Salem recorded 56 new cases followed by Erode (45). While Krishnagiri registered 39 new cases, Tiruvallur had 30 and Ranipet had 29. One patient from the USA tested positive for the viral infection at the international airport. Ramanathapuram, Perambalur and Tirupattur reported one new case each, followed by four each in Kallakurichi, Karur and Nagapattinam. There were six cases in Vellore and seven each in Ariyalur, Nilgiris and Pudukottai and eight each in Dharampuri and Tiruvannamalai.
Of the 9,408 active cases, there were 3,343 in Chennai, 911 in Coimbatore and 754 in Chengalpet. Every district in the state had more than 10 patients under isolation. There were 466 patients in the hospital including 172 on oxygen beds and 50 in ICUs. Of the 76 patients admitted to hospitals in Chennai, 14 were in the ICU.
