JAIPUR: The Jaipur police on Sunday recovered 23 kg of precious gemstones, and other jewellery items worth nearly Rs 2 crore from a 31-year-old man who had staged a major theft inside a jewellery workshop last month in Brahmpuri area.
DCP (North) Paris Deshmukh said that the accused was identified as Mohammad Wasim, a resident of Moti Doongari Road of Jaipur. Police said that the accused eight months ago ventured into a business of readymade garments after running two gyms in the city.
Wasim soon ran into losses as his garment business began to lose traction. “He had lost nearly Rs 10 lakh in his previous enterprise. To eke out a living, he began working at a jewellery workshop in the city,” Deshmukh said.
Police said that the accused decided to stage a major theft in a jewellery workshop unit to cover his losses. The accused began searching for a perfect target in the city.
One particular workshop on Mount Road near Jagdish Colony drew his attention. The police found Wasim enlisted the help of his aides to help him plot the theft by keeping a close eye on visitors, customers and workers.
“The accused jotted down all important details about the workshop. He studied all routes. On July 23, the accused and his aides broke into the shop and decamped with valuable gemstones and jewellery,” said an official.
Investigators said the accused target furnished gemstones. He did not touch leftovers or raw materials. “This was a peculiar thing about the theft. The accused did not touch anything else other than fully cut precious stones. We suspected the mastermind of this crime was somebody who was well versed in the jewellery business. We narrowed down the search to plausible suspects,” said an official.
Police said they discovered that a man living in Moti Doongari may have some connection with the theft. As the police team dug deeper, they found that the suspect on their watchlist was no other than the chief perpetrator himself.
