Commonwealth Games 2022, Day 11 Live Updates: PV Sindhu wins gold in Women’s Singles

A thoroughly convincing win for Sindhu, who let's not forget wasn't one hundred percent fit going into the final. Michelle Li tried to make her move up and down the court but the Indian coped well with her opponent's game plan to play the final on her terms.

One has to remember while Sindhu did win Gold at the Gold Coast CWG in the Mixed Team event, she had to settle for a silver in the Women's Singles final against one Saina Nehwal in the all India final. At Glasgow 2014, she finished with a bronze in the Singles. Here, she is close to getting her first CWG Singles gold. 

A five point advantage for India's star shuttler in the second game of the Women's Singles final, leads 11-6 having already won the first set.

Star paddler Sharath Kamal and world champion boxer Nikhat Zareen have been named India's flagbearers during the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games. 

Michelle Li is testing PV Sindhu with the long rallies. It's 4-4 in the first game.

With those words from coach Bhaskar Bhatt ringing in her ears, Nikhat Zareen charged forward from her corner as the bell rang to mark the beginning of the final round of the light-flyweight gold medal bout of the Birmingham Games. Leading on all five cards after the first two rounds against Northern Ireland’s Carly McNaul, all Nikhat had to do was stay out of trouble for the rest of the bout. She did just that, dancing and prancing around the ring, staying away from her opponent’s reach, smiling and swaying – and occasionally sneaking in a mean punch – and pocketing the gold medal. The Indian men’s hockey team midfielder Vivek Sagar Prasad will not be available to play the final against Australia today at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. He has picked up a minor knee injury and has been advised rest.  The team will be playing with 17 members today: Hockey India

Eldhose Paul started with a dawdling, please-turn-to-page 2 distance of 14.62 metres when competition in the triple jump final started at the Commonwealth Games. He had made the finals of the World Championships a fortnight ago but with no 17-m jump to his name ever, there was no halo. On Sunday, Paul’s sub-15m first jump, and a career-best of 16.99m, put him in the flanks of the two fancied Indians — the rocker, white headband-wearing Praveen Chitravel and the compulsive 17m-plus hop, skip and jumper Abdulla Aboobacker Narangolintevida. Modestly built, and a slow starter, Paul gave no indication that a monster 17.03m was in the offing, till he leapt and flew further than anyone else in that morning medal session. It was a distance that would have seen him finish sixth at the last Olympics in Tokyo. In Birmingham, that meant a rare 1-2 for India at an international track and field event, with Paul taking gold and Abdulla the silver even as Chitravel missed the bronze. Read More

The common refrain this summer had been that Indians brought a spot of happy sunshine along to the UK when they came for the Commonwealth Games. Bathed in glorious warmth that Birmingham just can’t seem to get enough of, as crowds thronged stadia in the summer of sport, India’s T20 cricket team wanted to steal a bit of filigreed gold in return. The women looking to have their own big 1983 Lord’s moment at Edgbaston threatened to prick the Aussie bubble, but imploded at the final hurdle losing by 9 runs. At the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Sunday, Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem won the javelin throw gold and underlined his status as a world class athlete. With his effort of 90.18 m, Nadeem crossed a barrier that even India’s Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra hasn’t. While Chopra missed these Games because of injury, in the coming days the healthy on-field rivalry between the two friends is expected to intensify – both egging the other to throw the javelin further. Chopar’s best is 89.94m. On his way to the gold, Arshad Nadeem broke the record and even pushed the World Championship gold medalist Grenada’s Anderson Peters, who threw 88.64 m, to the second spot. The town of Mian Channu in Pakistan’s Punjab stayed up late to catch the historic occasion.
