Pune: Waste picker arrested on charges of murder

PUNE: The Yerawada police on Sunday arrested a waste picker for sexually abusing and assaulting a 46-year-old woman to death at Parnakuti in Yerawada on July 31 and August 1.
The woman's husband had lodged a complaint with the Yerawada police on August 1. Police then started searching for the unidentified assailants. Police inspector Uttam Chakre of Yerawada police said, "We arrested Satish Harwade, a footpath dweller, for causing the woman's death."
"Prima facie, he may have sexually abused her and killed her after she resisted him. He dumped her body in the bushes near Parnakuti area, on the banks of the Mula-Mutha river. The medical reports are awaited," Chakre said.
The woman had left her house on July 31 and was walking on the road. "The waste picker grabbed her hand and took her to a secluded area where he would have sexually abused her, and when she resisted him, he assaulted her on her head. She died on the spot and he hid the body in the bushes," Chakre added.
They found a cap and chappals at the spot. " CCTV footage and saw the man wearing the same cap. We took him into custody and he revealed what had happened," he said.
