5.8 lakh Chennaiites have benefitted from Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam scheme: Minister

CHENNAI: A total of 5,80,000 people have benefited from the Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam scheme in Chennai in the last year, said health minister Ma Subramanian on Saturday.
After distributing free medical kits in Kodambakkam, to mark the first year anniversary of the door-stop healthcare scheme, the minister said out of the five lakh, 1.90 lakh with blood pressure, 1.59 lakh with diabetes and 1.77 lakh with both the diseases had benefited from the scheme.
He said 560 women volunteers had been roped in to carry out the scheme and it would be expanded further.
During the event, mayor R Priya, deputy mayor Mahesh Kumar, health secretary P Senthil Kumar and zonal officials were present.
