A CISF jawan was shot dead while one seriously injured even as a CISF jawan allegedly fired around 15 rounds in the CISF camp inside Indian Museum premises. The armed jawan, who fired several rounds, was on duty, and was arrested after a 1.5 hours operation by Kolkata police.
"Around 6.30, we received information that firing was going on inside the Indian museum. Accordingly, the DC central and Combat team rushed into the spot. We have successfully convinced the person and disarmed him. We had communication with the CISF during the operation," Vineet Goyel, Kolkata Police Commissioner told mediapersons.
"One assistant sub-inspector was killed and one assistant Commandant rank officer was injured. We think around 15 rounds of firing took place. Why the person fired is a matter of investigation," Goyel said.
Ranjit Sarangi, who was from Odisha, died due to the firing while the condition of Subir Ghosh, is in critical condition and has been admitted at the SSKM hospital.
After a one and half hour operation by CISF Commando forces, Kolkata police, Disaster Management Group and Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyel, the CISF personnel was arrested and the situation was brought under control.
The jawan used his service weapon to shoot his colleagues. The incident took place around 6:30 pm in the barracks as reported to Kolkata Police at the museum, which is India's "oldest and largest" such facility. The jawan allegedly took the step after he was not granted leave following his father's death for the last three days.
The museum closed today at 6PM, following which the incident happened.
The museum is located near Park Street, is an autonomous organization which is under the administrative control of the Union Ministry of Culture. The CISF took over the armed security of the museum in December 2019.
