A 31-year-old water cans vendor was shot at by two motorbike-borne assailants in Munugode mandal in Nalgonda district on Thursday night. Nimmala Swamy is out of danger. Police said preliminary investigation has revealed the role of his wife and her partner. Five persons, including Swamy's wife, have been detained for questioning.
Swamy's wife and her partner, who were held on the charges of criminal conspiracy and attempt to murder, offered Rs 1 lakh to kill the vendor, police said. The suspect, who fired at Swamy, is yet to be apprehended. Cops suspect that a country-made weapon was used by the assailants.
Despite suffering three bullet injuries on his back and right palm, Swamy survived and is recuperating at a private hospital. Police said extramarital affair was the reason behind the attack.According to police, Swamy was returning home on his bike when the assailants opened fire on him from behind near Singaram village on Munugode-Narketpally road at around 8.30 pm. Alerted by locals, police rushed to the spot and shifted Swamy to a hospital nearby. "One round pierced through his right palm and two other rounds remained lodged in his body. They were surgically removed on Friday. Doctors said Swamy is out of danger," said an investigator.
During the investigation, police found out that Swamy's wife, who works as a cook in a local school, developed an intimate relationship with a school staffer and hatched a plan along with him to eliminate her husband by offering Rs1 lakh to hired killers. The wife initially feigned ignorance when cops questioned her about possible suspects. It was after police spoke to people who knew the couple well and checked the cellphone call data records, the conspiracy unravelled.
Cops took Swamy's wife, who was present at the hospital, her paramour and three others into custody. A case under the Arms Act was also filed against them. Swamy, a resident of a village in Narketpally mandal, started his mineral water bottle supply business in Laxmidevigudem village near Munogode, in April this year and has been supplying mineral water to customers in Munogode and Chandur mandals.
