Western Railway to start 8 AC services from Monday
Western Railway is likely to introduce eight more services of air-conditioned trains from August 8 due amid rise in demand. Currently, 40 services run on WR on weekdays and 32 on Sundays. “Fifth rakes will be introduced in service, thus allowing us to run eight more services,” A senior official said. There will be services in morning peak hour at 7:30am from Virar, and at 9:48am from Borivli. During the evening peak hour, one service will operate from Churchgate at 6. 35pm. The decrease in fares of journey tickets by 50% has led to increase in ridership since May. The average per day ridership in July was 46,800 compared to 22,000 in April. In July the average per train occupancy was 1,515, compared to 1,102 in April. Minimum fare in AC coach for 5km distance is Rs 35 and for first class it is Rs 25.
Uttarakhand HC halts opening of 40 mountains to tourists
The Uttarakhand high court on Thursday halted the state government’s ambitious proposal to open 40 mountains and trails for trekkers and ordered the state pollution control board to conduct an environmental audit of the peaks first. A bench of chief justice Vipin Sanghi and justice RC Khulbe gave the order on Wednesday while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Almora resident Jitendra Yadav over alleged “ignorance” and “nonobservance” of the Extended Producer Responsibility Act and the “failure” of authorities to follow solid waste management laws in the state.
Delhi sees 2k+ Covid cases again
Delhi on Thursday recorded over 2,000 Covid cases for the second straight day, with 2,202 people testing positive. The positivity rate stayed high at 11. 84% and four more deaths were reported. There are currently 6,175 active cases, with 373 patients in hospitals.
Madhya Pradesh: 17-yr-old fails in exam, ends life
A 17-year-old boy, who failed in class 10 supplementary exam, ended his life by jumping in front of a train in Misrod on Wednesday. No suicide note was recovered from the spot but the result of supplementary exam was declared on the same day in which he had failed. He was upset after checking the result. Misrod police registered a case and started investigation. Police said that the deceased Akshay Kushwah had failed in a subject. He reappeared in the exam and the result was declared on Wednesday. When Akshay got information that he had failed in a supplementary exam, he became upset and left home. His body was later recovered lying on railway tracks at Salaiya culvert.
