First suspected monkeypox case in Gujarat

RAJKOT: A 25-year-old teacher with suspected symptoms of monkeypox has been admitted in the government-run GG Hospital in Jamnagar. The patient, living on the outskirts of Jamnagar city, approached the dermatology department of the hospital on Thursday, with skin rashes and fever.
His samples have been sent to Ahmedabad's BJ Medical College and results are expected in a couple of days. According to the hospital sources, the rashes look 'unusual' but clinical examination could not conclude the reason for lesions. The rashes are bigger than those found in chicken pox patients. However, doctors of the medicine department believe that it's not a case of monkeypox.
When contacted, Jamnagar collector P S Zamsingh said, “The patient has no travel history but as a precaution we have kept him in an isolation ward and sent his sample for testing.” Dr Deepak Tiwari, medical superintendent of GG Hospital, said, “The patient has typical skin rashes on legs and other body parts along with fever.
It could be any other pox or insect bites too. However, as a precautionary measure, we sent his samples for testing. The symptoms of all poxes are the same, so we do not want to take risks.” Medical teams have already started contact tracing in the area near the patient’s house.
