Sleuths of the Bengaluru unit of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) found the heroin weighing 16kg in false cavities of two trolley bags the suspect was carrying. He had managed to smuggle the drugs from Ethiopia to Bengaluru evading detection by airport security personnel. After 11.30pm, when minutes were left for an express train to leave for Delhi, investigators entered a coach and spotted the suspect, later identified as a 35-year-old man from TN, who was carrying brown and black trolley bags. Inspection of the bags revealed custom-built false cavities that contained large quantities of heroin.
The DRI team apprehended the man and ascertained that the two contraband bags he was carrying weighed 8kg each. Interrogation of the suspect revealed he took an Ethiopian Airlines flight from Addis Ababa on Monday and landed at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) around 8pm. He managed to slip past the airport security, including Customs, with the contraband. He reached the railway station to head to Delhi to hand over the drugs to his handlers but was trapped by the DRI team here, sources said.
The TN man was booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for substance smuggling and was sent to Central Prison. DRI is probing further to find the suspect's links in Bengaluru, if any, sources added.
