CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation has marked Marina, Besant Nagar and Thiruvanmiyur beaches as no-plastic zones.
This goes in line with the beach restoration initiative mooted by the housing department recently at a cost of Rs 100 crore.
The corporation has said anti-plastic raids will be held on the beaches by the health officers of the respective zones every morning and evening.
The civic body on Friday raided 68 shops on Marina Beach and collected Rs 100 each from 18 vendors for using single-use plastic.
From July 27 to August 2, the corporation raided 6,478 shops and seized 1,861 kilograms of banned plastic items and collected a fine of Rs 9.17 lakh.
