JAMMU: Jammu & Kashmir Police on Thursday claimed to have arrested a Punjab-based narcotics smuggler carrying heroin and a huge amount of cash amounting to Rs 1.91 crore, while his accomplice was killed in a road accident while he tried to run away.
Udhampur SSP Vinod Kumar said a patrolling team from Udhampur noticed two persons moving in a suspicious manner near Gole Mela petrol pump on Wednesday night and on seeing cops they ran towards the main road and one of them was knocked down by an unknown vehicle and got seriously injured.
"The police party on duty immediately shifted the injured person to the district hospital in Udhampur, from where he was referred to Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu, and during treatment, he succumbed to his injuries," the SSP added. The deceased was identified as Mukhtiar Ahmed, a resident of Prada Tangdhar in Kupwara.
The SSP further said, "Jagtar Singh of Pakhopur in Taran Taran district of Punjab was apprehended by police and after a thorough search of his vehicle, approximately 250 gms of heroin was recovered along with Rs 1.9 crore cash." He added that preliminary investigation revealed both persons were involved in the smuggling of narcotic substances.
