The Met department also warned of heavy rains in Odisha over the next several days due to the possible formation of a low pressure area. Torrential rains continued to batter several parts of Karnataka on Thursday. Five teams of NDRF and four teams of State Disaster Response Force have been deployed across the state to take up rescue and relief works. Meanwhile several parts of Delhi witnessed rains on Thursday and the weather office has predicted more rains for next two days.
Kerala government Wednesday said that landslides and flash floods in the state caused by heavy rains killed 18 people in the last few days, damaged hundreds of properties and displaced thousands.
In Karnataka, as many as 11 people, including children, have been killed in several rain-related accidents across Karnataka in a month even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for the districts of the coastal region of the state forecasting ‘heavy to very heavy rain’ till August 5.
Several parts of the national capital witnessed rains on Thursday bringing a slight respite from the warm and humid weather while the weather office has predicted more rains for next two days.
Areas that witnessed showers include isolated places in Lutyens Delhi near India Gate, Sansad Marg, ITO, Palam, Shahdara, Dilshad Garden, Ayanagar, Deramandi, Pitampura and Najafgarh among others.
"There will be generally cloudy sky with possibility of moderate rain on Friday and Saturday. The minimum and maximum temperatures on Friday is likely to hover around 26 and 34 degrees Celsius," an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
The weather office said that the maximum temperature of the day settled at 34.6 degree Celsius, a notch above the season's average. (PTI)
As torrential rains continue to batter several parts of Karnataka, Revenue Minister R Ashoka on Thursday said the state government is prepared to take up rescue and relief measures in a "war footing".
Five teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and four teams of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed across the state to deal with the situation and take up rescue and relief works.
"18,280 hectares of agriculture crops, 4,565 hectares of horticulture crops, 55 health centres, 2,146 anganwadis, 16,510 electric poles, 1,880 transformers and 61 lakes have been damaged," Ashoka said. (PTI)
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Thursday took stock of the situation arising out of heavy rain in several districts of the State and ordered the district Collectors to not release water from dams without prior intimation to residents.
Stressing the need to remain vigilant, he said the administration should not discharge a huge quantum of water from the reservoirs at night.
The Chief Minister, who reviewed the situation with the Collectors of 12 districts virtually from here, directed them to take precautionary measures in safeguarding foodgrains, especially paddy bags, at the direct procurement centres by covering them with tarpaulin to prevent the paddy from getting soaked in the rain. At least 19 people have died in the heavy rains and flooding in the state since July 31. It also caused damage to 32 properties completely and 232 partially, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) said.

The Met office on Thursday warned of heavy to very heavy rain in Odisha over the next several days due to the possible formation of a low pressure area.
The weather system may form over northwest and west-central Bay of Bengal around Sunday, it said, predicting widespread rainfall from Saturday to next Wednesday across the state.
Fisherfolk have been advised not to venture into the deep sea areas of west-central Bay of Bengal from Sunday due to squally weather with gusty wind speed of 45-55 kmph in the region.
The Met issued a yellow warning of 70-110 mm heavy rain in some parts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Kalahandi, Gajapati and Ganjam districts on Friday. There can be downpour in several districts, including Puri and Cuttack, over the subsequent three days, according to a bulletin. (PTI)

The city has witnessed a partly cloudy morning Thursday with the minimum temperature of 26.8 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the season, the weather department said.

BBMP chief commissioner Tushar Giri Nath said that the most-affected areas in Bengaluru city due to heavy rainfall on Monday and Tuesday were KR Puram and Mahadevapura.
"Water is being pumped out from Sai layout, Pai layout and Nagappa Reddy layout in KR Puram. The Rainbow Drive layout in Sarjapur is also badly affected and we are working on redesigning of the drains. The work has been taken just now," he said.

The national capital witnessed a partly cloudy morning Thursday with the minimum temperature of 26.8 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the season, the weather office said. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate rains during the day.
"There will be generally cloudy sky with possibility of moderate rain and thundershowers. The maximum temperature of the day is likely to hover around 33 degrees Celsius," an IMD official said.
The weather office said that the city received 7 mm rainfall in 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Thursday. Overall, the city has received 312 mm of precipitation against a normal of 307.7 mm since June 1 when the Monsoon season starts. The relative humidity at 8.30 am on Thursday was 83 per cent. ---PTI
Threat of a flood loomed large in northern districts of Bihar on Wednesday with many rivers in the region flowing above danger levels, the water resources department said. Heavy rainfall in Nepal and some parts of the state situated along the border has caused a rise in water levels of Kosi, Kamala Balan and Bagmati rivers over the past few days, it said.
The three rivers were flowing well above their danger marks in districts such as Sheohar, Sitamarhi, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Supaul, Madhubani, Khagaria and Purnea.
Barring Jainagar and Jhanjharpur in Madhubani where the Kamala Balan has started showing a receding trend, water levels were rising everywhere. The water resources department asserted that its teams were keeping a round the clock vigil at barrages and embankments.
Meanwhile, the water level in the Ganges has also risen and it was just about a metre short of the danger mark at Gandhi Ghat and Hathidah in Patna district. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who had been indoors for a fortnight after testing positive for COVID-19, upon recovery stepped out of his residence and conducted an extensive survey of the areas located along the mighty river. ---PTI
Delhi on Thursday is expected to receive moderate rainfall today, the IMD said in its 7-day forecast. On Wednesday, the city witnessed light showers after a brief gap.
Here is a happy news for women adventure buffs in the state as Kerala Tourism is organising an exclusive rainwalk and cycling event for them. The rainwalk would be held at Thusharagiri in this northern district on August 8.
The event is being organised by the state tourism department in association with the World of Women, an independent travel group.
The cycling event, scheduled on August 7, would begin from Mananchira and would culminate at Pulikkayam here on August 7 and district collector Thej Lohith Reddy would flag off the programme, an official statement said here.
The programmes are organised in connection with the International Kayaking Competition-Malabar River Festival being held in the district for three days from August 12. ---PTI
