As uncertainty over the cabinet expansion in Maharashtra continues, both Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday maintained a low-profile, with neither holding meetings with cabinet hopefuls and other MLAs.

Shinde fell ill due to overexertion on Thursday morning and doctors advised him to rest for a day. While he rested at his official residence Nandanvan and cancelled the day’s events, the MLAs who had turned up to meet the Chief Minister were asked to go back. They were advised to meet another senior rebel MLA, Uday Samant, at his official residence in front of Mantralaya.

Congress: AICC secy postpones Mumbai visit after summons from Delhi

Amid rumblings in the Maharashtra state unit of the Congress, AICC (All India Congress Committee) Secretary H K Patil, who was expected to arrive in Mumbai to meet senior leaders of the state Congress on Friday, has postponed his visit after summons from Delhi.

For Shiv Sena corporators, it’s ‘routine work’ with new set of challenges

In the aftermath of the rebellion in Shiv Sena that led to the vertical split in the party, staying connected with their constituents has become crucial for Sena’s former corporators in Mumbai, especially as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls are round the corner.

While it has proved to be challenging to do so without the designation of corporator, councillor’s funds at their disposal or budgetary provisions for development work, Sena corporators said they are doing “what Shiv Sena does best – connecting with the masses”.

Winning the upcoming BMC elections is a priority for the party, but it now comes with its own set of challenges. Former Sena corporators are reaching out to their constituents, putting in 12 to 15 hours of work a day to address civic issues in their areas, and spending money from their own pockets for local developmental work in their wards. Read more

Plea by young lawyer prompts court to question state on lack of health infrastructure in remote tribal hamlet in Gadchiroli

Nearly 1,000 km from Mumbai, a small hamlet in the tribal-dominated Gadchiroli district, Vengnur, gets cut off from the rest of the world every year during monsoon, when the nearby Dina Dam overflows. Lack of medical care for months is among the many problems the residents face as they have no way to access healthcare when the dam overflows.

It was only in June this year that the Bombay High Court’s Nagpur Bench took cognizance of the plight of the tribal residents of the hamlet and issued notice to the state regarding “violation of fundamental rights” of the tribal residents. The court also appointed an independent advocate to furnish information in response to complaints of unavailability of health infrastructure and unmanned boats in tribal Vengnur Gat gram panchayat, which constitutes four villages – Vengnur, Padkotola, Adangepalli, and Surgaon.

The court’s intervention came after a 23-year-old lawyer from the area, Bodhi Ramteke, wrote a petition to the court alleging that the state was violating the fundamental rights of local residents by not providing them basic infrastructure facilities. Read more here
