CHENNAI: An armed reserve police constable shot himself dead with his service rifle while on guard duty at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium on Wednesday.
Senthil Kumar, 31, was a native of Sellur in Madurai and joined the force in 2011. He was married and had an 18-month-old son. Police sources said Senthil Kumar was upset after his wife went to her parents' home a few weeks ago after the couple quarreled.
Police said the constable walked into a bathroom and shot himself around 12.30pm. On hearing the gun go off, other policemen on duty rushed in to find him lying dead in a pool of blood.
Senthil Kumar was part of the security detail posted at the stadium where rehearsals are underway for the closing ceremony of the chess Olympiad on August 10. TNN
