Bhubaneswar: After four days of impasse between permanent vendors and footpath sellers which led to the closure of the Unit-II market, the city’s biggest retail and wholesale facility will reopen on Thursday.
The market was shut since Sunday as unauthorised vendors on the footpath who had been evicted, returned to carry out their business. Big traders, who have permanent outlets, have been opposing small vendors using footpaths and the space in front of their shops. On July 24, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) had evicted the footpath vendors to decongest the market and to ensure cleanliness.
On Wednesday, BMC officials, members of Unit-II Central Market Building Association and police held discussion after four days of closure of the market. After the BMC promised to ensure removal of encroachment for ever and provide security to the permanent vendors, the association agreed to reopen it. “Traders with permanent (authorised) space in the market were apprehensive that they would face disturbance from unauthorised vendors if they reopen. But we promised that no such incident will happen as police and BMC officials together will carry out enforcement from Thursday,” said BMC deputy commissioner Kamaljit Das.
