In 2022, Bollywood stars courting controversy seems to be the norm. From Akshay Kumar to Aamir Khan, all have borne the brunt of irate netizens. The latest to kick the hornet’s nest is Bollywood’s latest sensation, Alia Bhatt.

In the run-up to the release of her next ‘Darlings’, social media is abuzz with the hashtag ‘Boycott Alia Bhatt’. A day ahead of the release, netizens are calling for a boycott of the film as some of them feel that the film promotes violence against men.

The film slated for an August 5 release features Vijay Varma, Shefali Shah, and Roshan Matthew in key roles. Alia will be seen playing Badrunissa Shaikh, a survivor of domestic violence. The movie is already attracting a lot of attention due to the ‘boycott Alia Bhatt’ trend. Varma plays Hamza, husband of Badrunnisa. The trailer showed how the mother-daughter duo try to abduct Hamza to settle scores with him for beating up Badrunnisa.

Alia’s character is shown as seeking revenge by hitting Hamza and drowning his face in the tank of water. Many users on social media felt that the movie is inadvertently promoting domestic violence. Some even said that the movie was glorifying violence against men.
Even as the hashtag began trending, some users defended the Alia Bhatt starrer by urging netizens to watch the trailer before trending such hashtags.
The dark comedy ‘Darlings’ is Alia Bhatt’s debut venture as a producer. The film will have its premiere on August 5. Meanwhile, other big releases such as ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ and ‘Raksha Bandhan’ too have been at the receiving end of social media’s backlash.
