HOWRAH: The RPF on Wednesday arrested a man from Howrah station for carrying Rs 35 lakh in cash. Rajkumar Soni, 52, was arrested after he failed to explain the source of the funds or the reason why he was carrying the money. The cash was seized and later handed over to the Income Tax department.
Acting on a tip-off, the RPF intercepted Soni on Wednesday afternoon soon after he got down from the Chambal Express. RPF personnel followed him as he walked down the platform and accosted him. The money was recovered from his bag. Soni is a resident of Jabbalpur.
On being probed, Soni claimed that he was carrying the money to buy jewellery from a man from Nadia who was supposed to meet him near Burrabazar. But he failed to provide any valid document. IT officials were called in and they started questioning Soni.
According to ROF sources, it is being investigated if the money was being sent through the hawala route.
