KALYAN: A drunk man tried to set himself ablaze outside a police station in Bhiwandi on Tuesday. The man, Niyaz Ansari (42), has sustained 25% burn injuries and has been admitted to hospital. The police said he had called up the police control room a day earlier, claiming to be a 'terrorist'.
Ansari, an autorickshaw driver, was upset that his vehicle had been impounded by a bank, from which he had taken it on loan, due to default in repaying loan instalments. He had, however, lodged a complaint stating that his autorickshaw was stolen.
After the 'terrorist' phone call was traced to Ansari's number, he was called to Narpoli police station on Tuesday. The police said he was drunk when he came to the station.
Ansari also claimed that a police constable identified only as Jadhav had taken money from him to help return his vehicle but failed to do so. The police claimed that Ansari is lying.
At the police station, Ansari created a ruckus outside the police station, drawing a crowed at the spot, said the police. He struck a match and set himself on fire. Cops present there doused the flames and took him to hospital. Sources said Ansari blamed them (the police) for trying to kill him.
Ansari has been booked for attempt to commit suicide.
