10 contractors of minor irri dept booked for fraud

Nagpur: The zilla parishad authorities have lodged a complaint with police department against around 10 private contractors of the minor irrigation department for duping state government and the local body by Rs1.23 crore.
The offence, now being probed by the economic offence wing of the crime branch, was registered at Sadar police station.
Sources said the contractors, after getting works at Dhamangaon and Katol, had misused the security amounts deposited mandatorily for their contract to complete their constructions. They had also withdrawn their security and performance deposits even before the completion of the work.
The contractors, in connivance of some insiders, used to also use one security and performance deposits for two different projects too. Sources from the police department also stated that the contractors also completed most of the projects with sub-standard works.
The offence was registered following an inquiry by the ZP top brass who had approached the police department with the complaint for criminal proceedings against the erring contractors.
