Bhubaneswar: The higher education department on Wednesday allowed the Berhampur University to spend Rs 1 crore annually for repair and renovation works. The department had an annual spending limit of Rs 25 lakh last year for such works.

Last month, Berhampur University authorities had requested the department for enhancement of the annual spending limit. The department had fixed a ceiling of Rs 25 lakh in a financial year for the infrastructure works, new or repair/renovation/maintenance.

“Now, considering the proposal submitted by you, government have been pleased to enhance the spending ceiling from Rs 25 lakh to Rs 1 crore only per financial year for execution of new or repair/renovation/maintenance works in the university,” said additional secretary of higher education department Birendra Korkora in a letter to registrar of the university.

In July 2020, the state finance department had announced austerity measures like ban on launching new schemes/projects, restrictions on government recruitment, cutting expenditure on travel and vehicle and rationalizing establishment expenditure after sharp fall in revenue collection because of lockdown and other Covid restrictions.
