Heavy rain likely in Tamil Nadu interiors, Chennai to get light showers

CHENNAI: An active southwest monsoon and certain atmospheric disturbances may bring heavy rain to interior parts of TN while Chennai may get light to moderate rain for the next few days, weathermen said. Bloggers expect late evening or night showers in the city in the next 2-3 days.
S Balachandran, deputy director general of meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre, said there will be light to moderate rain over most of TN till August 5. “Southwest monsoon has intensified. There is an upper air circulation in the atmosphere over coastal Tamil Nadu. Further, there is a shear zone where easterlies and westerlies meet over the central region. This zone is likely to move towards the north direction in the coming days.” Due to this, there are chances of very heavy rain in 1-2 places of the mountainous region of Theni, Dindigul, Coimbatore and Tirupur districts on August 3 and very heavy rain over 1-2 places in Coimbatore and Nilgiris districts on August 4.
“Light to moderate rainfall is likely over some places of Chennai and the suburbs for the next two days,” the IMD official said. The weather agency has also forecast partly cloudy skies with temperatures to be around a maximum 33-34 degrees C and a minimum 26-27 degrees C for the next 48 hours.
Since June 1, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry received 242mm of rain against the normal of 125mm, a 94% excess. Chennai recorded 255.3mm against a normal of 180.3mm, a 42% excess. On Tuesday, Nungambakkam (Chennai) recorded traces of rain till 7.30pm, while Kodaikanal got 20mm, Valparai 10.8mm and Periyakulam 19mm. Weather blogger Pradeep John said Chennai missed rain that was earlier forecast due to unfavourable wind directions. “Favourable westerlies may bring rainfall in the next 2-3 days.”
