MUMBAI: The National Investigation Agency (NIA), probing the killing of Amravati chemist Umesh Kolhe, on Tuesday arrested two accused in the murder case. So far, a total of nine accused have been arrested.
Kolhe, 54, was murdered on June 21, allegedly for sharing a social media post supporting now-suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma’s remarks about Prophet Mohammed.
The Kotwali police station in Amravati had earlier arrested seven accused. The case was later transferred to the NIA which re-registered the case on July 2.
The two accused arrested by the NIA included Abdul Arbaz and Maulavi Mushfique Ahmed, both Amravati residents. The NIA stated that the two arrested accused were criminal associates of earlier arrested accused persons and a wanted accused, Shamim Ahmed. NIA said further investigations in the case are in progress.
Shah Rukh Pathan, 24, one of the accused arrested earlier by the Amravati police and later lodged at the Arthur Road jail, had last week complained to the N M Joshi Marg police that five accused, who were staying in the same barrack in the jail, had assaulted him. The N M Joshi Marg police has registered an FIR in the case. Pathan and six others, arrested in Kolhe murder case, had asked the jail authorities to shift them in some other jail for security reasons.
