PUNE: A 30-year-old housewife, who had ordered a
cake worth Rs400 online from Moshi lost Rs1.67 lakh to a cybercrook after the fraudster asked her to scan a QR code in March this year.
The victim had filed a complaint with the cyber cell of the Pimpri Chinchwad police. A case was registered with the Bhosari MIDC Police on Monday after a preliminary investigation.
Inspector Pradip Patil of the Bhosari MIDC police said the woman had searched for the contact number of a cake shop as she wanted the cake to be delivered to her. She then selected a shop and ordered the cake worth Rs400 on March 4. "She had tried to send money online, but the transaction failed. The person on the other side then sent her a QR code and requested her to scan it to make the payment," said Patil.
Patil said a transaction of Rs400 was executed when she scanned the QR code. "Soon after the first transaction, several other transactions took place via her bank account. Within a few hours, the cybercrook emptied her bank account by transferring Rs1.67 lakh," he said.
He said our investigation so far has revealed that money was transferred to a private bank account in another state. "We have sought more details from the bank. Our probe is on," he said.
