NAGPUR: A 35-year-old man, Narayan Prasad Dwivedi, was intercepted in full public view and stabbed to death by his minor daughter’s jilted lover on Sunday morning, barely 100-200 metres away from the crime branch and Gittikhadan police station. The alleged assailant, Balram Pandey, 20, wanted to be in a relationship with Dwivedi’s 14-year-old daughter but faced opposition from her family.
Angry residents later gheraoed Gittikhadan police station to vent ire against the cops and Pandey. Police had to deploy bandobast near Pandey’s house. Sources said Pandey and his family run a liquor business at their residence near Bajrang Chowk in Surendragarh.
Dwivedi was on way to his work at a snacks stall at Nagpur railway station. He has three children and was the only breadwinner of the family.
Sources claimed that after committing the crime, Pandey clicked photographs of the body and sent them to someone. The police, however, denied the claim.
Pandey had allegedly been issuing threats to Dwivedi, who had been his tenant for over a decade. The victim had moved to another residence after Pandey relentlessly started harassing his minor daughter.
In the last few days, Pandey was said to be flashing a dagger at Dwivedi’s daughter. During one of their verbal duels, Pandey had also threatened Dwivedi not to change his residence.
Just a day ago, Dwivedi, after discussing the issue with his family and friends, had made up his mind to approach Gittikhadan police to lodge a complaint against Pandey.
The accused, who had followed Dwivedi from his home, waited for him to come out of the petrol pump near the crime branch office before repeatedly assaulting him with a knife.
Pandey was rounded up by the police within hours and an offence of murder was registered against him.
Sources said that CP Amitesh Kumar ensured that Pandey was also booked for harassing the minor, which Gittikhadan cops were ignoring. Pandey has also been booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, after the intervention from the top cop.
Post mortem delayed
Negligence on the part of Gittikhadan police added to the woes of Dwivedi’s family as they reached the Mayo Hospital mortuary at 7pm with documents for the post mortem. The murder took place at 8.30am on Sunday.
According to a senior official from the hospital, the PM of sensitive cases cannot be performed after 7pm as per the norms. The body of Dwivedi was to be taken to his native place at Rewa in MP by his widow. A huge mob had gathered at Gittikhadan police station protesting the delayed paperwork.
