Commonwealth Games Day 4 Live: Mac Neil's Story

The Sandwell Aquatics Centre, tucked away in a leafy lane at Smethwick on Saturday night with a bunch of swimming finals lined up, is a tiny peek into just how closed a loop, the pool has been at the Commonwealth Games. Indian Srihari Nataraj tries over the first 50 metres of the 100m backstroke, swimming in Lane 1, but fades off on the last 30. Pristine waters with the audience getting to high-five swim champs and a very white-dominant list of winners. Swimming remains a western world, affluent nation’s preserve at the Commonwealth, more than any other sport on the program Between them, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, England, Scotland and Wales have won 1,721 swimming medals at the CWG. Leaving South Africa’s 30 aside, Papua New Guinea, Jamaica (6), Kenya, Zimbabwe, India, Isle of Man, Trinidad, Guyana, Singapore, Malaysia and Bahamas have just 19. Also Read

Commonwealth Games 2022 Medal Tally: Medal standings and India tally on Day 3

Weightlifter Achinta Sheuli (73kg) lived up to his top billing as he clinched India’s third gold in the Commonwealth Games on Sunday. Favourite to win the event, debutant Sheuli heaved 313kg (143kg+170kg) to grab the gold at NEC Hall here on Sunday. CWG 2022: Family time @ the cricket

It was a slantways entry into joining the ‘sports-watching’ culture of Britain, for Shaz, a mother of two pre-teens, who came to Birmingham as a child, but never socialised over sport. “My husband brings the kids to Edgbaston when the men’s teams play. But I wanted to come along too and watch since Pakistan women were playing,” she said of her first trip to a stadium not 10 minutes from her home, but one she never considered she’d walk into, having only a mild passing interest in the sport. A women’s sport wave has been sweeping over England all of this last week, with the football team becoming European Women’s champions beating Germany in the final. “It’s not like anyone stopped me. But I never felt like watching men’s cricket. But Indian women vs Pakistan women I didn’t want to miss at all,” says the mother, out-numbered at least five to one by Indian families who thronged Edgbaston, including a bunch who came down from London to introduce their young daughters to the sport. Commonwealth Games Day 4 Live: Jeremy Lalrinnunga!

After winning the gold medal in the 67kg men’s weightlifting category on Sunday, Jeremy Lalrinnunga revealed that Tokyo Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu has been a big source of inspiration for him. “Didi (Chanu) motivates me a lot. I have had the opportunity to learn a lot from her,” he said at a press conference. “She had met me and wished me luck before the event. During my round, she was standing right in front of the audience with the Indian flag. She guides us all the time.” Chanu herself had a successful outing at the CWG this year, winning the gold medal in the 49kg women’s category by a landslide. Her total of 201kg was 29kg more than silver medallist, Mauritius’ Roilya Ranaivosoa. Read More

Commonwealth Games Day 4 Live: Achinta Sheuli's story

A dilapidated brick structure stands out amidst the wild bushes and overgrown trees. A lone cow moos at a cowshed right. A giant tricolour hangs on the wall at the porch, where five young women and men are pumping iron. The ‘platform’ on which they stand is uneven, the barbells and the metal plates have turned rusty and stained, torn cloths are tied to the roof to shield them from sun and rain. Nothing really gives an impression that champions can be produced at this unassuming facility in Deulpur, roughly an hour from Kolkata. But this is where Achinta Sheuli – a junior world championship medallist and national record holder who won India’s third gold medal at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday with a Games Record of 313kg (143kg in snatch, 170kg in clean and jerk) – began his journey.
