Is it a mark of disrespect if a young cricketer addresses a legend of the game by only his first name?
A lot of users on Twitter thought it was, and they let Australian batsman Marnus Labuschagne know so after he addressed Sachin Tendulkar as 'Sachin'.
It started with Tendulkar talking to Twitter to wish the Indian women's cricket team at the Commonwealth Games 2022 all the best.
"Wonderful to see cricket back in the Commonwealth Games. Hope this takes our beautiful game to newer audiences. Best wishes to @BCCIWomen’s team for their #CWG22 campaign," he tweeted.
To which Labuschagne, currently the No.2 test batsman in the world in the ICC Test batting rankings, replied: "Agreed Sachin. Aus v India is going to be an amazing opener too."
Labuschagne then came under a lot of fire from Indian cricket fans. Many felt the 28-year-old Labuschagne ought to have addressed the 49-year-old Tendulkar as 'Sachin sir'.
Others immediately pointed out that calling someone by their first name is no sign of disrespect in western cultures. And that it is a common practice there.
In February 2020, Tendulkar had heaped praise on Marnus Labuschagne for his precise footwork, saying the Australian batsman reminded him of himself. Labuschagne had responded then, saying: " Amazing words from someone of that calibre. I was very grateful for his words and just stoked, really."
