CHENNAI: While the extended term of the Justice A Arumughaswamy Commission, probing the death of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa, is set to expire on August 3, the court-appointed All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) medical board has informed the commission that its final report on the matter would be submitted in the first week of August.
“We respectfully submit to the Commission of Inquiry that the final report of the medical board will be submitted within the first week of August as the members of the board are out of India till August 1,” member-secretary of the board said in a communication addressed to the commission.
On June 24, the
Tamil Nadu government extended the term of the Arumughaswamy commission till August 3 following a request made by the commission. Now, another extension is likely until the AIIMS team’s report is received.
On November 30, 2021, the Supreme Court directed the AIIMS to constitute a medical board to assist the Justice Arumugasamy Commission which is probing the causes of the death of former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa.
Apollo Hospitals, where Jayalalithaa died after 75 days of treatment, had demanded a medical board to assist the commission in understanding the treatment offered to her before her death in 2016.
Accordingly, a six-member team headed by Sandeep Seth, professor from the department of cardiology was nominated by AIIMS.
The commission has conducted inquiries with several people in connection with the death since it commenced hearings in November 2017.
