BENGALURU: A 24-year-old police constable on probation was arrested on charges of raping a 17-year-old minor girl on the night of July 27.
According to police sources, Pavan Dyavannanavar was on night patrol and met the distraught girl sitting alone in a Vijayanagar park here. On the pretext of comforting her, he took her to his room and raped her. tnn
The girl is from a village in Chamarajanagar and lives with her parents in west Bengaluru. Pavan Dyavannanavar, who hails from Chikkodi, North Karnataka, is posted at Govindarajanagar police station and lived in a rented room in Vijayanagar. Appointed as constable in 2021, Pavan has been suspended and remanded in judicial custody of Central Prison.
Police sources said: "A boy from Chamarajanagar district had befriended her on Instagram and they fell in love. He told her he'd come to Bengaluru on July 27 and meet her. They wanted to elope. She messaged him that day, saying she was ready to join him and left home. But he apparently got cold feet, switched off his mobile after reading her message and remained incommunicado. Not knowing where to go, she sat in the park."
They added, "Pavan promised to help her trace the boyfriend and take her home. Since he was a cop, she trusted him and went to his room."
Meanwhile, the girl's parents approached police about their missing daughter and filed a complaint the same night. On Thursday morning, Pavan gave her Rs 500 and dropped her at the KSRTC bus terminal at Majestic. She took a bus to Chamarajanagar and went to the boy's home, seeking an explanation for his behaviour that landed her in trouble.
"The boy's father was at home and the survivor broke down before him. But she did not reveal what Pavan had done to her. Since she was a minor and was in love with his son, the father alerted local police. At the station, she revealed what had happened to a woman police personnel. She was brought to Bengaluru. Later, she filed a police complaint," sources added.
