NEW DELHI: The Congress is planning to observe a massive nationwide protest on August 5 over price rise and unemployment.
Congress MPs in Delhi will hold 'Chalo Rashtrapati Bhavan' from Parliament to register their protest over the issues while CWC members and senior party leaders will participate in 'PM
House gherao'.
In state capitals, Congress leaders and workers will gherao Raj Bhavan and court arrest. "All elected public representatives from village to district level will court mass arrest," read a letter by party general secretary KC Venugopal.
Opposition parties have been holding daily protests in Parliament ever since the monsoon session began on July 18, to demand a debate on price rise, GST and rising unemployment. The protests in Parliament has resulted in the suspension of a total of 27 MPs so far.
The government is likely to debate the price rise issue in the
Lok Sabha on August 1 and in the Rajya Sabha on August 2. The session ends on August 12.
The government had said that it would be ready for a debate on price rise after finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman's health improved after a bout of Covid.
India's annual retail inflation in June climbed to 7.01% from 6.26% a year earlier, as per government data. This was above the central bank's tolerance band of 2%-6% for the sixth month in a row. There have also been protests over the levy of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on essential items that were earlier out of its ambit.
