KALYAN: Four men attacked two brothers in broad daylight on a main road near a Shiv Sena shakha in Ambernath's Shivaji Nagar on Friday, killing one of them. The other sibling has been hospitalised with multiple stab wounds.
The brothers, Tushar Gunjal (32) and Ganesh (29), were into construction business besides having vegetable shops. According to police, the killers came in a car and began assaulting the Gunjals with bamboo sticks. During the attack, one of the suspects opened fire, resulting in a bullet hitting Tushar in the chest. Even as Ganesh rushed to the rescue of his brother, the shooter tried to open fire at him too, but his pistol got jammed. Meanwhile, another attacker stabbed Ganesh repeatedly with a sharp weapon. The assailants then fled the spot.
There were several people on the road at the time of the brutal attack, but no one dared to step in to help the hapless Gunjals.
The brothers, though badly injured, rushed to Shivaji Nagar police station, which is about 200 metres away, from where cops took the two to hospital, where Tushar succumbed to his injuries.
Taking serious note of the attack, senior police officials, including Thane top cop Jaijeet Singh and DCP Prashant Mohite, rushed to the spot. Separate teams, including the crime branch and the anti-extortion cell besides the local police, have been formed to probe the case. A police official said, "The preliminary probe shows that the main accused is a local goon who has multiple cases, including murder, against him."
The Gunjals were reportedly expanding their business in an area where the key accused is said to have a hold. This is believed to have led to a dispute between the sides.
